![]() Improvement would require a fundamental re-write of nearly every aspect of the story. Almost nothing about the story is truly driven by gameplay or anything actually related to the player's character, as they are a non-character without motivation who simply exists to kill (and unlike games like Bioshock, the PC as a non-character is not a critical part of the narrative). The main story relies on obfuscation of detail and exposition dumps to progress, mistaking lack of information for intrigue. Some of the most potentially interesting mysteries and moral quandaries of the setting - particularly surrounding cloning, immortality, and AI infiltration of humanity - are dropped in out of nowhere and left almost entirely unexamined and unresolved. "Tell don't show" hamfisted writing, weak storyline justifications, and a cast of characters made of easily digestible tropes that feel like they rolled off the Generic Anime Character factory line bog down any potential the setting had for mystery or actual emotional stakes. It takes place following the "Fulfill Life's Purpose" ending. Oh, and because I'm nice, I guess I can spare some details about my fanfiction project. I'm looking at YOU, mission where Grief basically tells you his entire evil plan to you*.* Some backstories do appear in the game, but feel forced compared to the other dumps we get later on. Include stuff from the Sourcebook - their fleshed-out personalities, their backstories - and portray it in the game that flows and feels natural. There's a certain lack of investment for a big chunk of them, and when they try to do so, it comes off as awkward. Otherwise, there are a lot of areas for improvement, the most glaring one being the characters and their writing. The "Star Reclaimer" serial appears (to my interpretation, at least) the actual story they wanted to tell, but could not portray. The best option to improve the original game's story would have been to give more time for the development team to flesh it out more. The cast of cardboard characters are plagued with messy writing which tells rather than shows, and try too hard to make the player care about each and every one of them - which is, unfortunately, hard to do here.Īnd, for extra credit, provide what you could've done to improve the story and/or its storytelling. The expansive setting that had so much potential is bogged down with a tolerable yet uninteresting story.
